The northern coasts of Iran, are the proof of its diversity in term of landscape and climate. the largest lake of world with a surface area of around 371,000 square kilometers. It lies in the north of Iran in Mazandaran, Golestan and Gilan province and has a maximum depth of about 1025meters. The water of this lake is of two kinds, i.e. it is a fresh-water lake in northern portions whereas on Iran shore is saline. It is the settlement of more than five hundred plant and 850animal species that some of them are Salmon, perch, pike, sturgeon, Algae and herring. Also, one of very few seal species living in Caspian Sea. Orange and lemon trees, rice-fields and tea plantations line the coast , which is flanked by mangroves and marshes.
Gilan Province
Rasht, known as the city of delicious and colorful food, is the capital of Gilan province. Bandar-e Anzali , Chaf, Chamkhaleh, Astara, Rudsar, and Kalachai, Chaboksar are the most beautiful coasts of Gilan with tourism facilities.
Mazandaran Province
You can find some of the best coastal facilities of the Caspian Sea in this province. Ramsar is one of the most popular destinations in this area. Not only you will enjoy being by the sea, but there are other attractions like palaces, adventure tourism facilities, and beautiful sceneries. Namak Abrud, Tuska Sara, Salman Shar (Motel Ghoo), Si Sara, Noshahr, Mahmoud Abad, Fereydoun Kenar, Amol, Babol, Babol Sar, and Noor are some of the best places in Mazandaran that are located by the sea.
Golestan Province
Although Golestan has fewer coastal cities and destinations in comparison to the other two states, you can still see wonderful coasts and forests of Iran in this region. Gorgan Coast, Bandar-e Turkaman, Bandar-e Gaz, and Gamishan are some of this state’s attractions. The beautiful island of Ashuradeh is situated on the north east of gorgan bay.
UNESCO has recently inscribed the Hyrcanian Forests to the World Heritage List. It’s a very valuable green zone of forests that date back 25 to 50 million years. The climate is naturally mild and humid.
A four-hour drive from Tehran, the Caspian is Iran’s Riviera, with a narrow plain of paddyfields and orchards separating the sea from forested mountains where bears and leopards roam around ruined Mongol castles.
There are several roads connecting Tehran to the three provinces, all through breathtakingly beautiful scenery, across the mountains or alongside rivers. One of the roads from Tehran to Chalous on the Caspian coast, winding north across the rugged Alborz mountains, passes the popular ski resort at Dizin. 2 other roads from tehran are haraz and Rasht express road.

Beluga caviar comes from the Beluga sturgeon (hence the name) and most of these fish live in the Caspian Sea. In fact, the Caspian Sea provides 90 percent of all world’s caviar. Beluga sturgeon are the third most massive living species of bony fish in the world and the biggest freshwater fish. They can live for 120 years and weigh over 1,000 pounds. These are huge fish.
